Old Bohannon Dam is Coming Down After Construction of New Dam

We are thrilled to announce that the removal of the old Bohannon Dam is underway. The cleanup is set to be completed by the end of September. The old dam is no longer needed, nor functional, after more than 75 years in service.

The aging structure couldn’t support modern upgrades, and operating it meant hands-on, manual gate adjustment regardless of the weather conditions. It was clear a long-term solution was needed; thus, the New Bohannon Dam went operational earlier this year.

The new dam includes a modern SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) setup with Rubicon gates, giving operators the ability to monitor and adjust flows remotely. No more manual board removal, just smarter, safer, and more efficient operations. On top of that, we’ve improved access around the site, increased conveyance capacity, and added flexibility to manage flows and reduce pressure on Karnak when needed.
